Spring String Thing Concert
Over nearly 50 years, JMU’s Spring String Thing has created an opportunity for middle and high school students to get experience playing in a large orchestral ensemble. In the past two years, director of JMU orchestras Dr. Kira Omelchenko has introduced a call for scores, allowing Virginia students from high school and college to submit short works for string orchestra. “Soaring Shadows” was selected as a winner for the 2nd annual SST Call for Scores, and the piece will be premiered by the Vivace Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Colleen Ferguson.

JMU Opera Theatre Presents: “Dialogues of the Carmelites”
Tickets: https://jmuforbescenter.com/events/2026/02/06-dialogues.shtml
Sung in English with English surtitles.
In 1794, during the final days of the French Revolution, a group of Carmelite nuns joyously went to the guillotine singing psalms and hymns of praise. This defiant display of love and generosity in the face of certain death helped turn the tide of the Reign of Terror and has inspired countless individuals in times of crisis and turmoil. This fascinating moment in history became the subject of French composer Francis Poulenc’s 1956 opera. Written in the wake of World War II, Dialogues of the Carmelites is a profound meditation unlike any other work in the repertoire. Through beautiful choruses and intricate scenes, the opera explores how we live, how we die, how we fall apart, how we come together, and why we must keep singing to the very end.

JMU Club Composition Presents: The 4th Annual Art of Music Concert
Every Fall, JMU Club Composition conducts an interdisciplinary collaboration known as “Art of Music”. Student composers are assigned a piece of artwork, and tasked with writing a short piece of original music to accompany said artwork within the span of a week. The challenge culminates in a concert, this year held in Anthony-Seeger Auditorium, where students are invited to present their artwork, and perform their compositions for an audience. This project has been a great opportunity for students from JMU’s School of Music and School of Art, Design, and Art History, to collaborate and share their skills with one another, and provide an opportunity to share their work with a wider audience.
JMU Opera Guild Presents: “Echoing Legends”
On April 26th, 2025, JMU's Opera Guild put on their production of 4 unique, student-composed opera scenes. "Children of Lir" (2024), my fifteen minute chamber opera, was one of the featured works.
