After 4 years, today I’m proud to say that I’ve completed my Bachelor of Music, majoring in composition and minoring in industry. I came to JMU knowing very little, and severely lacking confidence in my abilities. 3 or so years later, I’ve grown and accomplished so much more than I would’ve imagined for myself in that moment - I hope 20 year-old Emma is proud of me. It’s not always been easy, but I’ve had the pleasure of exploring many opportunities that I wouldn’t have otherwise. Thank you to all of my peers and mentors who saw potential in me when I couldn’t see it in myself - I owe you everything 🩷 (and don’t worry, I won’t be far 😉)

An excerpt from the “cooling” section of “Caldera” (2025). JMU SO captured this part perfectly - creating distance between the ascending line, before descending in triplets, and aligning to close the section. So proud of this piece 🌋

Additionally, my latest orchestral piece “Soaring Shadows” will also be premiered at the end of May, with the culmination of JMU’s Spring String Thing. I want to extend my thanks to Dr Kira Omelchenko for creating many opportunities for student composers, and for making both of these premieres possible. 💜

First post-recital piece is up! If I had a nickel for every winter-themed flute piece I’ve written this year, I’d have two nickels. “Whippoorwill Winter” is identified by Tennessee’s Historical Society as the season where the Whippoorwills’ call can first be heard at twilight & before the dawn. The flute’s main motive is based on the song of the whippoorwill. I hope you enjoy some short and sweet sounds 🪶🫶
